When Professional Teeth Whitening Is Needed
Your smile may become stained, dull or otherwise discolored over time due to:
- The natural aging process
- Foods and drinks that stain
- Poor dental hygiene
- Smoking or the use of other tobacco products
- Illness
- The use of certain medications
- Fluorosis (excessive fluoride consumption)
Professional teeth whitening is a simple and highly effective option for enhancing your smile. Our dentists and team offer both in-office and take-home whitening to help you improve the appearance of your teeth. We will review your options with you and discuss the different types of whitening available in our office to determine which whitening system is right for you.
In-office whitening works to enhance your smile in a single visit to our office. When you receive this type of whitening treatment our dentists will apply a whitening gel to the surface of your teeth. The gel will then work to break up stains and discolorations on your tooth enamel. Your teeth should be noticeably whiter by the time you leave our office.
Take-home whitening involves the use of custom whitening trays which you can wear at home and on your own schedule. Our dentists will design your trays to fit comfortably and provide you with whitening gel. Simply place the gel into the trays and then wear them as directed by our dentists. Over time the color of your teeth will gradually lighten until you have achieved the desired shade of white.
Our dentists may also recommend Invisalign whitening if you are receiving orthodontic treatment. This type of whitening involves the use of whitening gel while wearing your Invisalign aligners to straighten your teeth.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office and speak with a member of our team. We will be happy to discuss your teeth whitening options with you and help you schedule an appointment!
FAQ
Is teeth whitening safe for my teeth and gums?
Yes, teeth whitening is safe when performed by a dental professional or when using dentist-recommended products. Professional treatments are carefully designed to minimize sensitivity and protect your enamel and gums. Over-the-counter products can be effective but may pose risks if used improperly, so it is always best to consult our dentists.
How long do teeth whitening results last?
Teeth whitening results can last anywhere from several months to a few years, depending on your oral hygiene habits and lifestyle choices. Avoiding staining foods, beverages, and tobacco can help maintain your results longer. Regular dental cleanings and occasional touch-up treatments can also extend the longevity of your bright smile.
Can teeth whitening remove all stains?
Teeth whitening is highly effective for removing surface stains caused by food, drinks, and smoking. However, it may not be as effective on intrinsic stains, such as those caused by medication or trauma. In such cases, our dentists may recommend alternatives like veneers or bonding for a more comprehensive solution.
Will teeth whitening cause sensitivity?
Some patients experience temporary sensitivity after teeth whitening, but this is typically mild and resolves within a few days. Using toothpaste for sensitive teeth before and after treatment can help. If you have existing sensitivity, inform our dentists so they can adjust the treatment to ensure your comfort.
